It's easier than you might think...

If you're like me, the idea of migrating my email or calendar away from Google seemed daunting at first. Way too much trouble. Way too much work. But what if it took less than 10 minutes?

Moving away from Google

Hi [CORRECTED_NAME GOES HERE], as you might already know, I've been spending this summer testing out different ways to extract myself from the grip of companies like Apple and Google.

And hear me out: it's not about trying to get rid of all Apple and Google products in my life. I think it's hard to deny the fact that they make really good products.

I don't want one company to have a monopoly in my digital life.

Case in point: I don't want either company to be the vault that stores all of my passwords. I just think that's a bad idea.

They already know so much about me and track hundreds of different identifiable data points - why should I also entrust them with the keys to my digital fortress?

When I think about "de-Googling" my digital life, it really breaks down to:

  • Exporting all Passwords: If you still keep all of your passwords in the Chrome browser, I beg you to consider exporting to a better option.
  • Switching Calendars: Your calendar events are visible to Google - that includes who you're meeting with, where you're meeting and any details. That's a bit too much access, in my opinion.
  • Migrating Email: You probably have years (if not a decade!) worth of email archives and history, which is probably why it feels so hard to migrate away.

There's more that can be done, but I'd consider these to be the big three. And I know that last one feels like it might take a while, but it really doesn't.

What if I could teach you to migrate email in less than 8 minutes?

That's what I've tried to do in this week's YouTube video tutorial and if you know somebody who might benefit from seeing this, please share it with them!
