EU War on Privacy

*sponsored by DeleteMe

a HUGE win for Privacy this week

You may or may not have heard about Chat Control, a controversial bill that has been debated in the EU for months. It would have effectively killed encryption, and thankfully it seems it won't get enough votes. Here's what you need to know:

the EU War on Privacy (Chat Control Explained)

Go Deeper: We tend to take encryption for granted. It feels like an obvious right to privacy, which is why it seems to weird when politicians claim that no such civil liberty exists. This isn't the first time it has happened, and it won't be the last. Here's more about encryption:

The Chat Control Debate

Hi [CORRECTED_NAME GOES HERE], is common as a US citizen to look at what's happening in the EU and think "that doesn't affect me".

Similarly, I'm sure it's easy for an EU resident to do the same when they look at the chaos that is the United States right now.

For better or worse, though, the internet has made our world so small that it actually does matter. Laws passed in the EU can have a dramatic impact on the US, Asia, and Africa. Same with policies in the US.

So when we hear about this "Chat Control" debate, it's worth taking a few minutes understanding what's going on. You should be asking several important questions such as:

  • Why would any reasonable person want to break encryption?
  • How does "client-side scanning" work and is it still a threat?
  • How would killing privacy in the EU affect the rest of the world?

These are questions that I think I was able to answer in this week's explanation of Chat Control. It's less than 7 minutes long, so it's worth the time to learn.

Build Better Privacy!

As somebody who values privacy, we not only want to preserve encryption, we also want to make sure that our personal data isn't floating around the internet. I use DeleteMe to erase my email, phone number, address, and government-leaked data from the internet. You should too.

Germany opposes Chat Control

This is the news we had hoped for, and thankfully Germany stepped up to preserve encryption and strike down Chat Control. Here's the news that kicked it all off.

It should come as no surprise that Amazon has announced that their Ring cameras will now include facial recognition technology by default. According to them, "it’s intended to identify your sister, a neighbor or other people you know." Sure...

spyware mimics Signal?

In recent months, security teams have observed a surge in Android spyware campaigns that prey on privacy-conscious users by masquerading as trusted messaging apps.

Your Thoughts?

There's an argument to be made for the safety of children, and I don't want to dismiss that altogether. Do you think this is a good reason to break encryption?

I'm open to opposing opinions. Just be civil, please :)
