VPN Privacy 101

This isn't a "Top 5 VPNs" list

Everybody wants to tier rank security software like VPNs or, better yet, create a "top 5" list based on subjective opinion. But what if I told you that it all boiled down to ONE thing that is more important than features, server lists, or even pricing?

I tried 100s of VPN. Here's what you NEED.

Go Deeper: I've talked a lot about VPNs in the past. They're a useful tool, but they've been marketed as a "super privacy app" that can make you invisible. That's just not true. Check these other videos out to learn more:

the VPN myth

Hi [CORRECTED_NAME GOES HERE], I've used VPNs almost every day for the past couple decades. It's extremely useful for those of us who live overseas, particularly in countries with internet censorship (I'm looking at you, China).

And yet...I feel like VPNs are completely misunderstood.

If you listen to advertisements and sponsorships online, this software sounds like a cloak of invisibility. You just turn it on and you're suddenly invisible!

If only it were that easy.

The reality is that the way we are tracked online has evolved and the way we use VPNs is very much dependent upon your particular situation.

There is no "one size fits all" VPN, at least in my opinion, and in this week's VPN video I'm breaking down the three categories you need to consider before you purchase (or renew) your VPN.

This Week in Privacy News

Using a VPN may subject you to NSA spying

Six Democratic lawmakers are pressing the nation's top intelligence official to publicly disclose whether Americans who use commercial VPN services risk being treated as foreigners under United States surveillance law—a classification that would strip them of constitutional protections against warrantless government spying.

Apple Expands Age Verification in the UK

Apple unveiled new device-level age restrictions in the UK. After downloading a new update, users will now have to confirm that they are 18 or older to access unrestricted features.

AI Complicates Privacy Risks

This month, a federal judge ruled that a man’s conversations with Anthropic’s Claude chatbot were not protected by attorney-client privilege even though he had used the chatbot to prepare to talk with lawyers.

Your Thoughts?

Do you still use a VPN? If so, what's your particular use case? I'd love to hear from you if you have the time.

Have a great week.

✌️

War on Privacy

April 2026 the War on Privacy Stripping Away Our Rights It happens one seemingly insignificant policy at a time. Cameras to protect your neighborhood here, age verification to protect your children there. By themselves, it seems to make a lot of sense, but beneath the surface, there is an erosion of the fourth amendment that we can't surrender easily.
